ARAD is a modern city built on a site that is near 4,000 years old. In Numbers (21:1-3) Israel was attacked by the Canaanite king of Arad; Israel destroyed the army and renamed the region Hormah meaning “destruction.”  Arad is mentioned in Joshua (12:14) and in Judges (1:16) the seed of Jethro moved from Yericho to Arad. Arad is some two thousand feet above sea level, a relief to those coming from the lowest place in the world, the Dead Sea arena, and especially those with asthma or similar problems. Arad is located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from Beersheva and once controlled the road from the hill counry of Judah to Edom.
